THE AUGUST WILSON CENTER FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN CULTURAL PRESENTS:

FASHION AFRICANA: A TRIBAL BAZAAR

Celebration of Visual Traditions

On View September 29 - December 8

209/9th Street Gallery, Cultural District

A touring exhibition featuring 40 pieces by 25 emerging and established artists of color, Celebration of Visual Traditions is organized by The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts' Preserving Diverse Cultures Division, and aims to promote the visual traditions of multicultural communities in

Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh-based artists include: Leslie Ansley, JoAnne Bates, Tina Brewer, Vanessa German, LaVerne Kemp, Mary Martin, and Ruth Richardson.

 

      Dedicated to the memory of the Honorable K. Leroy Irvis, Celebration of

      Visual Traditions Pittsburgh exhibition will also feature a small exhibit

      of Irvis' own artwork, courtesy of his widow Cathryn Irvis.

 

AUGUST WILSON CENTER EDUCATION & PUBLIC PROGRAMS!

 

      Fiber Arts Class

      We are delighted to welcome acclaimed fiber artist Tina Brewer as she

      presents a ten-week course on contemporary quilting. Classes will be held

      beginning the second Wednesday in October, from 6:00 — 9:00 pm at the

      209/9th Street Gallery. Please call Cecile Shellman at 412 258 2694 for

      more information and to register.

 

      This project is made possible through the Arts in Education Partnership of

      the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency. It is funded by the

      citizens of Pennsylvania through the annual legislative appropriation

      process and is administered regionally by the Pittsburgh Center for the

      Arts which fosters a vibrant contemporary art scene in Southwest

      Pennsylvania by encouraging more people to create, see, support, and learn

      about visual arts. The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is supported by

      the National Endowment for the Arts.

 

      Children's Pottery Painting Class

      Saturday, October 28, 2006

      209/9th Street Gallery

      Noon-2pm

 

      Sandy Simon of Kiln-n-Time will conduct a class for kids at the. Artworks

      will be glazed and kiln-fired after the class a! nd will be available for

      pick-up at the gallery during the following week. The program will include

      a brief gallery tour and an afternoon snack.

 

      The class is open to children ages 6-12. The class fee is $15/student

      (includes all materials). For more information and to register for this
