Bearden in the Public Realm: A Symposium
Presented by the Romare Bearden Foundation
Friday and Saturday, March 26 & 27

August Wilson Center for African American Culture
980 Liberty Avenue, Cultural District
FREE. Register Now!

The Foundation will host Bearden in the Public Realm, a two-day series of panels discussing the influences and sources that extended Romare Bearden’s artistic and social engagement well beyond representations of the life of African Americans. The City of Pittsburgh figures largely in the work of Bearden and August Wilson, who credited Bearden's works directly as inspiration for two plays, Piano Lesson and Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Pittsburgh is also home to a major Bearden mural “Pittsburgh Recollections” a 16 x 30 ft tile work created in 1984 and housed in Gateway train station...more.  The presentations are FREE and open to the public. Seating is limited so please register at www.beardenfoundation.org or by calling (212) 665-9550.  This program is sponsored in part by The Heinz Endowments.

Step Up to Speak Up Events Use Spoken Word and African-American Greek Tradition of ‘Stepping’ to Raise Awareness for Organ and Tissue Donation

The tradition of stepping has been a part of the African-American sorority and fraternity experience for decades.  Spoken word as a performance art dates back to the legacy of storytelling that has existed for generations.

For the first-time ever, an event that combines these two expressions will be featured as a part of the state’s effort to raise awareness about the importance of organ and tissue donor designation among African-Americans.

The event, entitled Step Up to Speak Up, will feature step teams from historically African-American fraternities and sororities along with spoken word performers sharing their talents around the importance of organ and tissue donation for African Americans.  The events are free with the first one taking place Friday, March 12 in Pittsburgh, 6 – 8 p.m., at August Wilson Center for African American Culture. A second event will occur in Philadelphia on Saturday, March 27, 6 – 8 p.m., at the Pennsylvania Convention Center. [Read More] »

TaTanisha P. Smith, MDTatanisha P. Smith, M.D. Discusses Childhood Obesity

On Tuesday, February 9, 2010, First Lady Michelle Obama rolled out her “Let’s Move” campaign, targeting childhood obesity. She outlined a multi-part approach that involves families and communities and includes input from the public and private sector.

Dr. Tatanisha P. Smith, M.D.,  our newest Soul Pitt columnist, will be covering all topics pertaining to the good health of our children.  Her first column “Childhood Obesity” touches base with Michelle Obama’s campaign.  Tatanisha P. Smith, M.D., has returned to her childhood home of Pittsburgh to care for children at AGH Kids Ambulatory Pediatrics Clinic at Allegheny General Hospital.

A proud product of the Pittsburgh Public Schools, Dr. Smith received her bachelor’s degree in biology and pre-medicine from Florida A & M University in Tallahassee, FL, and her doctor of medicine degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, TN. She has recently completed her Pediatrics Residency at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, also in Nashville.  Click here to Continue

Winter Blues
by Sabrina Clark

So you can’t pull out your biker shorts or tank tops just yet and we all dread 6 more weeks of winter in Pittsburgh.  But why not make the best of it and look your best in it?  Put your best foot forward in denim.  Blue is one of the more popular colors right now. President Obama made us realize it and so did his dazzling wife Michelle.  There is so much to choose from these days.

Plus, Roland Ford’s “Step In The Name of Love” Blue Jean Cabaret is this Saturday and this time it’s Red, White & Blue Jean in honor of Valentine’s Day.  So here are some ways you can pull off those colors w/o looking like it’s the 4th of July in the middle of winter! Yeah I know you’re totally “Independent” but let’s look all put together for this one.

This is the new and ideal look for the event.  Denim Leggings or skinny jeans are what’s in…Denim Outfits are played OUT!  Their also more comfortable and flexible to get your “step” on in!!! This whole outfit minus the jewelry and belt would cost you only $60.   You can see the whole outfit broken down by price here.

You can also find Denim Leggings and Skinny Jeans at Target, Forever 21, Burlington and Ashley Stewart Online.

As a plus, February is “Go Red for Women” month, so any splash or pop of red is a statement about the no.1 killer of American Women.  Did you know that African American and Hispanic women are even more likely to suffer from cardiovascular diseases due to higher rates of excessive weight, Diabetes, high blood pressure and metabolic syndrome?  They are also less likely than white women to know that they may have major risk factors.  For more info go to www.GoRedForWomen.org  & celebrate Black History month by staying healthy and informed. Legal Soul with Elliot Howsie, Esq (Feb 2010)

Question:

Dear Soulpitt,
I have been in a relationship with my children's father for six years.  Overall we have a good relationship but like most relationships, we have our share of problems.  He is a great father to our children but he has his share of issues.  Due to him having a felony conviction from 1998 it has been difficult for him to find a decent job.  He will occasionally work odd jobs to make ends meet, but also does other things to provide for our family some legal and some not.  I don't agree with his decision to get involved with things that could potentially land him in jail or get him killed, but he sees this as the only way to make decent money.  No matter what I say he always goes back to hustling to make a quick buck when times get tough.  On one hand I do respect him for doing whatever he has to in order to provide for his family.  But I would rather struggle than visit my children's father in prison or at the cemetery.  In the past I would try to talk to him about hustling, hanging out all night and not working but he just ignored me.  I fear that what he does in the streets could directly affect his family.  I am scared every time the phone rings when he isn't home, because I think that someone is calling to tell me that he has been killed or arrested.  He tells me that there is nothing to worry about one time I found drugs and a gun in our basement where the kids play.  I'm afraid that he will be killed or we'll be victims of a home invasion, or the police will come and kick in our door and take everyone to jail.

Before Yolanda Adams performed, Bev Smith spoke to the crowd at the Women's Walk for Peace on Saturday Oct 3, 2009. Bev told the crowd of Pittsburghers that we are too silent as a Black community and how our Women need to get it together and how we need to start supporting Black businesses. Of course she broke it down to the crowd the way Bev Smith knows how to do!

SOUL PITT PET PHOTO CONTEST

Nope, it's not a cat and mouse, it's a dog and mouse.  Soul Sis captured this picture of her dog "Hero" doing what he does when she's on the computer too much.  He's an odd little long haired chihuahua or as she likes to call him "a nerdy dog with an identity crisis."  Does your pet do silly things like this?  Does your pet have a fly Steelers outfit or do you have a pic of your pet that's just too darn cute?  Send Soul Pitt your Pet's photo and your Pet just may get you 2 tickets to an upcoming event!  And boy do we have some great event tickets in our prize chest to giveaway.

I Picked Pittsburgh: Freda Koomson
Nixing New York for Pittsburgh, a city of opportunity

Friday, July 31, 2009
By Patricia Sheridan, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

After a stint on Staten Island and an Italian itinerary, Freda Koomson, 23, found Pittsburgh held the most potential for her future plans.  A first-generation American of parents from Liberia in West Africa, Ms. Koomson was charged with studying hard so she could succeed. The New York native did exactly that, earning an Ivy League degree from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. But the City of Brotherly Love wasn't doing it for her and, after graduating last year with a double major in Health & Societies and African Studies, she decided to head to Staten Island, where her mother had relocated from Brooklyn.  Click here to continue article
