SCA is seeking responsible leaders for our exciting
Pittsburgh youth program!


SCA, the nation’s leading conservation service organization for young people, is seeking responsible leaders for our exciting Pittsburgh youth program.


Crew Leaders will work with urban youth, aged 14-18,
performing outdoor conservation work at the Family Retreat Center in Mars, PA.

SCA specializes in linking youth with meaningful work that might otherwise not be done.

 

Your SCA crew might:

    • Construct and maintain trails through parks and forests
    • Improve and conserve wildlife habitats
    • Revitalize abandoned urban properties
    • Work on a community farm or garden
    • Participate in urban tree plantings

In addition to supervising service projects, leaders will plan and lead weekly field trips designed to build an ethic of community and environmental stewardship with participants.

Specific qualifications include experience teaching or working with urban youth, ability to maintain safe, productive and enjoyable work environment, strong interest in working with and mentoring youth, and relevant outdoor experience.


To lead a high school crew, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old.
  • Possess a valid driver's license.
  • Be in good physical condition (if selected you will be required to submit written results from a recent physical exam)
  • Obtain current CPR and First Aid certifications.
  • Agree to a background check done at SCA's expense (includes a current driving record).
  • Attend Crew Leader Orientation and Work Skills Training Saturday, June 14th – Sunday, June 22nd
  • Audubon Society of Western PA Naturalist Training the week of June 23rd
 
Salary: $100 per day
 
Program Dates: 
April 4th-May 23rd (Saturdays ONLY) 
June – August (6 weeks during the Summer)
September 12th – October 31st (Saturdays ONLY)
 

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
Applicant must be able to:

  • Carry heavy loads up to 40 lbs.
  • Use a variety of hand tools
  • Hike and work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Drive a passenger mini-van and/or SUV in a variety of weather conditions
