PERFORMANCE PROFILE


BACKGROUND
Pittsburgh Cares, a non-profit volunteer service organization, is part of the national Points of Light Institute (
www.pointsoflight.org). Founded in 1992, Pittsburgh Cares is a recognized, respected leader in volunteerism and community service in the Greater Pittsburgh region. Pittsburgh Cares increases community engagement through volunteerism and enhances the impact of regional service partners. 

With an active volunteer base of over 6,000 youth and adults, Pittsburgh Cares provides volunteers and capacity-building support to over 350 area community-based organizations. On average, Pittsburgh Cares coordinates between 60-75 service projects per month and logs more than 80,000 service hours annually.

Pittsburgh Cares operates on an average annual budget of approximately $850K, and is in sound financial shape with substantial earned revenue and diversified funding sources. The organization has experienced significant program growth in the past few years and is in a stable and sustained phase of its lifecycle. Pittsburgh Cares is operating in accordance with a strategic plan that was developed for 2009 -2012, and has met or exceeded many of its objectives.

POSITION OVERVIEW
The Executive Director is responsible for the leadership of the organization, including the implementation of Board set strategic plans, the achievement of annual fiscal and organizational performance goals and financial, program, and administrative management. The position reports to the President of the Board of Directors with the following primary responsibilities:

Staff Management and Internal Operations

  • Maintaining a work environment that attracts, supports, retains and develops a culturally-competent and diverse staff;
  • Ensuring that sound human resource practices are implemented, including regular supervision, updated job descriptions and weekly performance plans/progress reports, and that performance evaluations are conducted;
  • Providing overall leadership of staff and volunteers in all aspects of managing the organization including development and execution of plans, policies, programs, activities, grants, and related business;
  • Meeting regularly with staff, formulating and describing work methods and procedures to be followed by employees; appraising work conditions and organization effectiveness, and taking necessary steps to improve functional operation;
  • Ensuring the overall operation of the organization, including: reviewing and evaluating impact reports, and ensuring continual partnership efficiency where appropriate.

Financial Management

  • Responsible for the financial management of the organization, managing the approved annual budget, ensuring targets are met and providing for appropriate controls and accountability of all funds and assets in accordance with generally accepted standards of accounting;
  • Seeking out and developing opportunities for organizational growth through fundraising and other revenue generating initiatives;
  • Developing the annual budget and presenting it to the Board for approval each year;
  • Providing clear and timely financial reports to the Board of Directors.

Board Relations

  • Supporting all activities associated with the Board of Directors, including staffing for all Board and Committee meetings, meeting schedules, locations, development of agendas, preparation of and advance distribution of meeting materials;
  • Informing and advising the Board of Directors in the creation of policies, programs and strategic direction of the organization;
  • Working in close partnership with the Board of Directors, providing support and helping to fully engage and sustain an effective board that is accountable to the organization and the community.

External Relations

  • Promoting the organization mission and values to all stakeholders;
    Representing the organization through networking, interviews and presentations with community and professional organizations, the media, and similar groups;
  • Directing public relations and marketing strategies to create and sustain a positive public image for the organization;
  • Attending programs, workshops, seminars, and similar events for professional development.

Program Management

  • Building and sustaining partnerships with community partners and volunteers;
  • Overseeing the implementation of programs in line with key organizational goals and objectives;
  • Ensuring the evaluation of programs to improve and measure quality, effectiveness, efficiency, and impact.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
After 12 months in the role, the successful candidate will have accomplished the following:

  • Diversify and grow development/fund-raising – Each of the programs operated by Pittsburgh Cares is sustained by funding and sustaining themselves. Revenue diversification continues without an over reliance on any one type of funding.
  • Develop personnel - Staff continues to be productive, stable and motivated.
  • Maintain and build external relations – Existing relationships with the corporate sector remain strong, and new relationships are developed that lead to partnerships and financial support.
  • Achieve strategic plan – The objectives and strategies outlined in the strategic plan have been met, and a plan is in the works to update the plan to reflect the future of the organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
The successful candidate will have an extensive knowledge of nonprofit organizations and volunteerism as well as a commitment to the mission of Pittsburgh Cares:  To increase community engagement via volunteerism and enhance the impact of regional service partners. Candidates must also possess proven track record of fund development and management, program management, and staff leadership.

Additionally, candidates should possess the following:

    • Five years of work experience preferred, however consideration will be given to individuals with an advanced degree and a minimum of three years of substantial nonprofit work experience.
    • Proven skills in:
    • Financial management
    • Strategic planning and execution
    • Planning and organization, specifically with executing short and long term projects
    • Management and leadership focusing on directing, developing, and appraising employees and volunteers to attain strategic goals and objectives
    • Building and motivating high performing teams
    • Communication; written, verbal, interpersonal
    • Public speaking and media interface
  • Bachelors degree in business, nonprofit management or a related field; Analytical thinking with a strong talent for building consensus and fostering collaboration
  • Ability to work with a diverse pool of volunteers, service partners and cultural and professional styles
  • Knowledge of grant administration, contract negotiations/administration, community organizations and principles of marketing/public relations and media relations
  • Skilled use of MS Office Software Suite
  • An energetic, optimistic, and customer-centered personality
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to multi-task
  • Creativity, diplomacy and a passion for volunteerism

This position has an attractive compensation and benefits package, which is consistent with other nonprofit organizations of similar size, scope and scale.
